Research project: MONICO

MONICO is an extension of the TUNNELING Research Project, which focuses on the ability of real time structural condition assessment of the tunnel lining after a strong earthquake event. For this purpose, an improved type of fiber optic sensor is used, permitting the time history of the strains developed during the earthquake motion to be recorded.

The specific task of our company was to prepare the theoretical methodology and corresponding software for the creation of the moment-curvature diagram of the cyclic loading imposed on the critical cross-sections of the lining. An innovative form of the Parc-Ang damage criterion is established, permitting the exact automatic estimation of the damage degree at each one critical cross-section according to the Moment-Curvature diagram and the overall degree of stability.
