Research project: MEMSCON

This research project’s scope was to design a building monitoring system, accompanied by a data transfer network towards a central database, where the real-time structural assessment of buildings after a strong earthquake event would be carried out. The monitoring system requires the installation of two 3D accelerometers per storey diaphragm as well as in the foundation of the building, from which the acceleration time history of each one storey is produced.

Our company was assigned to develop the following theoretical methodology and software items:

  • Derivation of the displacements’ time histories of the storey diaphragms which result from the double numerical integration of the recorded accelerations’ time histories.
  • Calculation of the internal forces’ time histories, which are developed at the critical cross-sections of the structural members by using a non-linear structural analysis software applied on the structural model of the building.
  • Derivation of the moment-curvature diagrams at the critical cross sections for the cyclic repeated loading and calculation of the degree of damage according to the innovative implementation of Parc-Ang damage criterion.
  • Estimation of the global stability degree of the whole structure.
